Douglass was born into slavery in Cordova, Maryland in the early 19th Century. A leading member of the abolitionist movement, he visited Ireland numerous times and even befriended Irish nationalist leader Daniel O'Connell. His time campaigning in Ireland saw him speak at events in Dublin, Celbridge, Cork, Limerick, Wexford, Waterford, Bangor, Lisburn, Hollywood, and indeed Belfast. He first visited the Northern Ireland capital in 1845 at the invitation of the Belfast Anti-Slavery Society, returning for another visit in 1846.
