I taught special education at the same elementary school for 23 years. I made the gut wrenching decision to resign at the beginning of this year.. It wasn’t because of my students, the pay, or the parents…it was because of the administration. I was very good at my job. My curriculum vitae reads more like a person applying for a job at the collegiate level…..certainly not a teacher in the classroom.. I did indeed teach at the collegiate level..,.serving as adjunct faculty for NCA&T. The students and their parents were devastated. These children came to me with IEP’s and most stayed with me from the time they started kindergarten until they walked across the stage for their fifth grade graduation. Parents emailed the school board members… as they were blindsided by the fact that they did not find out that I was not there until sometime in late September early October. She was a toxic, narcissistic boss who used techniques like triangulation, lying, etc., but she was also a coward..she would never come talk to me face-to-face….it was always in her office with the door shut.. along with someone from HR who clearly she created and falsified a narrative before,..I had a chance to speak. I have never in 23 years been put on an action plan..nor even verbally reprimanded.. these are the types of people in schools and Power that promote systemic racism. They don’t feel like the marginalized populations are important, but I do.
